All of us who attended Womenz Night Out at the Langham were charmed by Peta Mathias. Recently I read an interesting article in a newspaper about the elusiveness of female financial security. A well-known New Zealand financial writer noted in the article that women still tend to depend on men for financial security. Single women may have good earnings, but they tend to plan no further than holidays and lifestyle purchases, and they hope (and possibly assume?) that a man will one day come along and rescue them. As this writer rightfully pointed out: what guarantee do women have, that life (eventually) comes with a man? Even more sobering is the fact that each year in New Zealand at least one third of relationships end, with more than 10,000 married couples divorcing and many more de facto relationships failing. Although assets are split under property laws, women are usually worse off when a relationship ends, according to research by the Ministry of Social Development. Recently, a group of nine teenagers sat around a table at a Chinese restaurant, sharing a selection of dishes that they had chosen together. The adult who was with them watched their animated faces with delight and satisfaction, whilst listening to the conversations and peals of laughter that swirled around the happy group. They were at the restaurant to celebrate the 15th birthday of one of the girls in the group (whom I will call Olivia). Olivia’s mother (I will call her Marie) was the adult accompanying them. Yesterday I read a quote in a newspaper that struck a chord. It comes from E. M. Forster (as a child): “I would rather be a coward than brave, because people hurt you when you are brave.” Those words aptly describe the experience I’ve endured over the past 14 months, at the hands of my employers. Someone famous once said… Some time last century Cecil B. DeMille said that the person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. (I wonder if that theory applies to finding a boy?) I digress. If success is supposedly achieved by dogged determination and single-minded commitment to the goal, why do we allow ourselves to be so easily derailed by the distractions that take us off track?
