For me, the first anniversary of a significant event tends to be a time of reflection. Fortunately that reflection is usually positive, as I look back 12 months and marvel “Look at where I was then, and look at where I am now.” I see progress, and progress goes hand-in-hand with growth. I’ll never forget sitting on the front steps of our home, 10pm on a school holiday week night, hearing my husband mumble the words, “I think I’m Gay.” It took quite some time for those words to sink in. I calmly absorbed the information and immediately thought, there will be a way around this, he has got himself a bit muddled, it must be the stress. Afterall I felt I knew him like the back of my hand, he was my husband, my mate, the person I was still in love with, even after 16 years of marriage. Sally Anderson has known TERROR beyond the norms of human endurance. She was abducted and gang raped at the age of 15 by more than 100 members of a New Zealand gang, the Mongrel Mob, in one of the worst reported gang rapes in New Zealand back in the early 80’s. Her story of survival, courage and transformation was profiled in New Zealand on 13 September 2004, in the TV3 programme 60 Minutes. When the documentary aired it turned out to be the most highly watched 60 Minute segment in the history of 60 Minutes New Zealand and it won the Qantas Human Relations Award for its contribution for making a difference. Life after abuseAdded Thu, May 3rd 2007, 11:49 As I was thinking about writing this article, I was wondering to myself how I would broach the subject of abuse. I then thought about the people who may be reading it that have themselves been abused, and their pain and I immediately felt unqualified to talk about it. Strange really, considering I too have been abused and yet, as with most people who have, I replayed the old tape in my head that says “you are not as good as everyone else” and I realise that I still have more work to do.
